Smash 137: One Man Show
The Basel street artist and graffiti writer Smash 137 has been sustainably influencing the international writer scene for years with his style. Smash 137 is obsessed with letters. Driven by his obsession with Western calligraphy, he is one of the most active writers worldwide, which means his lettering adorns many objects in public spaces from New York to Moscow.As part of the "Urban Feedbacks" exhibition, which was shown in Basel in January 2008, he realised an installation that ironically staged the reality of a writer. On more than 2500 cleaning sponges, attached to a wall, he sprayed his name in black and referred to the reactions of angry homeowners who want to counteract the annoying paint smudges as quickly and thoroughly as possible. At the same time, however, the sponge can also be read as a symbol of the transience of the work and the finiteness that comes with it.
