The urban habitat encounters us as a dynamic point of contact between an established order and newly created chaos. The constantly changing urban space creates the possibility for seemingly random encounters and agglomerations of people and matter. Like electric currents on a circuit board, individuals move through the network of urban centers, constantly creating new patterns.
To explore these themes, the Pretty Portal gallery will show works by Franz Schuier in June. Inspired by, among others, the media philosopher Vilem Flusser, the New Aesthetics movement and the dynamics of chaos and disorder, Schuier's first solo exhibition deals with the beauty and aesthetics inherent in random data. He uses freely available data sets (e.g. "atmospheric noise" from cryptography), which are transformed into colors, compositions and forms by programs he created. He also uses techniques of random composition, which were developed in new music by Stockhausen, Subotnik and Feldman, among others, and applies them to video compositions. From these moving images, he selects samples, which he develops using the Lambda photographic exposure process and mounts on Alu Dibond. "We have to accept that we live in disorder, in chaos, because whoever says coincidence also renounces orientation. Instead of orientation, however, one has something much more powerful, namely designing. I can design myself out of chaos into an order that creates me and is created by me."
